Are you the type that only gets or gives gifts on “remarkable” days (i.e. holidays, birthdays, or anniversaries)? Or are you like me and love instant gratification?
My husband says he does some of his best gift buying when he is not even present! And I have to say sometimes he really outdoes himself, especially when I discover the perfect gift and I happen to be by myself. In my world, it is all good. I accept that I am not a sentimental person. I enjoy each day and do not wait for certain days or occasions to let those closest to me know how I feel.
My sister’s birthday is coming up - we will text on our sibling group chat. I probably will not even call her on “the” day. Normally we talk the day following our birthdays so we can take our time and hear about the event. I do not get her a card or gift but when I am out shopping and see something I know she would love, I get it and send it to her. She does the same. The other day I got a surprise package from her with a t-shirt with a daisy on it and with a sweet saying of “Keep Blooming”. And wrapped up in the shirt was a ceramic cactus ornament. These two gifts represent our relationship—present and past. She edits my Blooming Daisies Crafts blog and the cactus is reminder of our Arizona childhood. She knew they were perfect for me. My BFF loves to send cards, however this year on my birthday she was experiencing a family emergency and ended up taking pictures of cards and sending them to me. We had such a good laugh over that, it was decided that we would do it this way every year!
My husband and I ask for wish lists from our grandkids and kids to make sure we get them what they want. I mean, I am sure everybody wants new socks - especially here in Florida where I can count on my fingers how often I wear them any given year. My nephew’s grandfather has told him and his cousins that the last grandchild to submit a Christmas wish list will get nothing that year. No child has missed out that I know of, but it has been confirmed that the kids have not taken any chances and returned their lists, post haste. I may have to steal that idea.
Speaking of “post,” I have to go there—toy catalogs! I am so sad for my grandkids. Who, in my generation, does not remember pouring over pages and pages of toys in the Sears & Roebuck catalog? Did you dog ear each page? How about spill milk on it as you looked through it at breakfast? I am so serious. I think that the time my siblings and I spent with our noses in the catalog rivals the screen time my grandkids have each day. Okay, my screen time, too. However, now I am shopping, comparison pricing, and checking reviews while sitting in my office chair, not lying on the family room rug with my sister. It was quality time.
